zaļums m (1st declension)

1. (usually in the singular) green, greenness (the quality of that which is green)

   lapu zaļums ― the greenness of leaves

   košs zaļums ― bright green(ness), greens

   pavasara zaļums ― spring green(ness), greens

   mežu tumšais zaļums ― the dark green of the forest

   gaišs zaļums sedz kalnus un gravas ― light green (= vegetation) covered mountains and ravines

2. (usually in the plural) plants, the green parts of plants (leaves, branches, etc.)

   zaļumu vītnes ― garland, wreath of greens (leaves, twigs, flowers, etc.)

   Mūsu kāzinieku dēļ baznīca bija pušķota zaļumiem ― because of our wedding, the church was full of greens, greenery (= plants, flowers)

3. (usually in the plural) leaves of certain plants (e.g., dill, parsley) used to season or marinate raw food

   zupu pārkaisa ar sakapātiem pētersīļu zaļumiem ― they sprinkled the soup with chopped parsley leaves (= lit. greens)

   uzturzinātnieki ieteic lietot vairāk zaļumu ― dietologists recommend the use of more greens (= dill, parsley, etc. leaves)

4. (usually in the plural) place in the open, with many growing trees, plants

   zaļumu balle, zaļumballe ― open-air ball, party

   zaļumu svētki, zaļumsvētki — open-air holiday, festival, celebration

   apkārt mājai daudz zaļumu: koki, zāle, puķes ― around the house there is a lot of green (areas): trees, grass, flowers

   saulainā svētdienā viņi visi iekāps vilcienā un aizbrauks zaļumos ― on a sunny Sunday they will all take a train and go to the greens (= green areas in the countryside)
