From Old Irish ingantus,[1] from the same root as ingnad, from in- (negative) + gnáth (customary, usual), from Proto-Celtic *gnātos (known, usual), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥h₃-tós, past participle of *ǵneh₃- (to know). Cognate with Irish iontas.
