Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *ʔiɛmʔ (breastplate), a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (bib worn by infants, SV: yểm), likely related to yểm (, “to cover; to hide”).

Cognate with Muong yểm. Compare the possible loanwords: Thai เอี๊ยม (íiam), Khmer អៀម (ʼiəm).
