From Proto-Albanian *wānti, a participle in *-nti,[1] or from *wānā, reflecting Proto-Indo-European *h₁weh₂- (to lack, be empty; to strive, to wish for, to love). Compare Ancient Greek εὖνις (eûnis, stolen; looted, lack, be short of), Armenian ունայն (unayn, empty, bare, lacking), Latin vanus (bare, lacking, empty, void, vacant), Old Norse vanr (lacking).
