From ver- + bieten, Old High German farbiotan from Proto-Germanic *furibeudaną. Compare Dutch verbieden, Low German verbeden, English forbid, Danish forbyde, Swedish förbjuda, Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (faurbiudan).
