vận động viên
Vietnamese
Etymology
Sino-Vietnamese word from 運動員, composed of 運動 (“sport”) and 員 (“-person”), Chinese 運動員/运动员 (yùndòngyuán), with the Chinese "sport" sense of 運動/运动 (yùndòng) that is not productive in Vietnamese. Compare Japanese 運動員 (undōin, “campaign worker”), which makes use of the "arousal; mobilization; campaign" sense of 運動 (undō) instead.
