Etymology
Metathetical alteration of Old Portuguese torvon (possibly influenced by troar (“to thunder”)), from Vulgar Latin *turbōnem (“whirlwind”), accusative of Latin turbō, turbinem, with altered declension. Compare Galician trebón, Spanish turbión (archaic or dialectal turbón). Doublet of turbina, from ultimately the same Latin root, through French.
