From Old Galician-Portuguese estroydo, estrom (14th century, “racket”), perhaps from a Vulgar Latin *extronǐtus, or less likely *extronŏtus, from metathesis of Latin tonĭtrus (“thunder”). Compare Spanish estruendo.
