According to Jokl, Tagliavini, Çabej a cognate to Proto-Slavic *mora (nightmare) / Ancient Greek μέριμνα (mérimna, trouble, thought, uneasiness).[1][2]

According to Orel borrowed from Latin timōrem.[3]
