From Prakrit, ultimately from Sanskrit ताम्रक (tāmraka, “copper”). Compare Ardhamagadhi Prakrit 𑀢𑀁𑀩 (taṃba), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀢𑀁𑀩 (taṃba), Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀢𑀁𑀩 (taṃba), or Pali tamba from Sanskrit ताम्र (tāmra, “copper”).
