From Old High German durfan, from Proto-Germanic *þurbaną (“to need; must”), from Proto-Indo-European *tetórpe (“to be satisfied”). Compare German dürfen, Low German dörven, English tharf, Icelandic þurfa, Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌱𐌰𐌽 (þaurban).
