Borrowed from (c. 16th–18th century) Early Modern Spanish jugar (“to play”), from Latin iocārī. In Early Modern Spanish, ⟨j⟩ was pronounced /ʃ/; this was adapted by Tagalog as /s/, in common with other early borrowings (compare sabon, singkamas, sugarol, saro, and tasa). Doublet of huwego.
