spraġ

Maltese

Alternative forms

  • ispraġ (after the article)

Etymology

In all likelihood from Arabic أَسْفَراج (ʔasfarāj), from Ancient Greek ἀσπάραγος (aspáragos). While the Maltese -p- may be due to influence by cognate Sicilian spàraciu, the -ra- strongly points to inheritance.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /spraːt͡ʃ/

Noun

spraġ m (collective, singulative spraġa, paucal spraġiet)

  1. asparagus
