Etymology
From Latin spongia (“sponge”) (with a change in gender), compare Romanian spânz; metaphorically applied to horse diseases, as in Spanish espundia (“skin ulcer (in horses)”), Sardinian spòngia, ispunzòla (“wobbler syndrome”); ultimately from Ancient Greek σπογγιά (spongiá). Cf. also Albanian spëndër.
