1. The ulcerative type of dermal leishmaniasis, with secondary manifestations in the nose and mouth, occurring in parts of South America.

Probably from Latin spongia (“sponge”). Doublet of esponja. Compare Galician espulla (“wart; growth in cows”), also Romanian spânz (“horse disease”).
