Etymology
From Middle High German spalten (strong verb), from Old High German spaltan, ultimately from or related to Proto-West Germanic *spilþijan (“to destroy, spoil, ruin”).[1] Cognate with English spald (“to split”), Danish spalte (“to split”), Norwegian Bokmål spalte (“to split”), Swedish spalta (“to split”).
