From Proto-Germanic *sunuz (“son”), from Proto-Indo-European *suHnús (“son”). Cognate with Old English sunu, Old Frisian sunu, Old Saxon sunu, Old High German sunu, Gothic 𐍃𐌿𐌽𐌿𐍃 (sunus).
