Etymology
Inherited from Old Catalan sofre, from Latin sulfur, from Proto-Indo-European *swelplos, from the root *swel- (“to burn, smoulder”). Doublet of the borrowed form sulfur. Compare Occitan solpre, French soufre, Spanish azufre.
