Etymology
Inherited from Old Catalan sobirà (also subirà, sobiran), from Vulgar Latin *superānus, from Latin super. Cognate with Occitan sobeiran, French souverain, Spanish soberano. Doublet of soprano, which was borrowed from Italian.
