- From Proto-Albanian *staiga, from Proto-Indo-European *stóygʰos (“way”), from *steygʰ-. Cognate to Ancient Greek στοῖχος (stoîkhos, “line, row”), Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌹𐌲𐌰 (staiga, “way”), Latvian staigāt (“to walk”) or Latvian pastaĩga (“a walk”).[1]
- From earlier shtek, from Proto-Albanian *śtaigʉh, from Proto-Indo-European *stóygʰos < *steygʰ- (“to climb”).[2]
