From Proto-Slavic *sěděti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sēdḗˀtei, from *sedéh₁yeti, from Proto-Indo-European *sed-. Cognate with Upper Sorbian sedźeć, Polish siedzieć, Czech sedět, Old Church Slavonic сѣдѣти (sěděti), Russian сиде́ть (sidétʹ).
