Perhaps from Proto-Mon-Khmer *prhuək, derived from *phɔɔk ~ *pʔɔɔk (fish-paste); compare Khmer ប្រហុក (prɑhok, fish-paste), ផ្អក (phʼɑɑk, fish-paste), Mon ဖြံက် (hərɔk, fish-paste).
