Uncertain. Usually regarded as imitative (lautmalend).
Compare Middle Low German ruspelen (“to burp, regurgitate, vomit”), Middle High German rüspeln, riuspeln ("to clear one's throat"; > German räuspeln, räuspern), Old High German girūspen (“to resist, struggle up”).
