Etymology
Inherited from Latin arānea (“spider's web”), later coming to refer to skin diseases such as herpes, scabies, impetigo, etc. This word is either from or akin to Ancient Greek ἀράχνη (arákhnē). Compare Aromanian arãnji, rãnji, Megleno-Romanian rănă, Galician raña. Compare also Italian rogna, French rogne, Portuguese ronha, and Spanish roña, which came from a root *aronea or *ronea that was probably influenced by rodere.
