From Proto-Albanian *kla(u)tja, from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂u- (“nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors”). Cognate to Ancient Greek κλεῖς (kleîs), Latin clāvis, Lithuanian kliaudýti (“to stop, to prevent”).[1]
