From an expressive variant in -rr of Proto-Albanian *putso, from Proto-Indo-European *puH- (“rotten, foul”); compare Sanskrit पूयति (pūyati, “stinks, rots”), Latin pus (“discharge from a sore”), Ancient Greek πύθω (púthō, “to rot”). Doublet of fëlliq.
