Probably from Vulgar Latin *pedinus,[1][2] a derivative of Latin pedem (foot). Compare Sicilian pèdinu, Romanian piedin, Albanian pedim. Alternatively from Latin pendulus.[3] Less likely linked to penna / pinna (feather).[4]
