Inherited from Old Spanish páxaro, pássaro, from Vulgar Latin *passarum, alteration of Latin passer (sparrow), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *p(e)t-tro- (who flies, bird), from *peth₂- (to fly). Compare Portuguese pássaro. A distant doublet of peña.
