Etymology
From earlier *ospetale, from Late Latin hospitāle (“hospice, shelter, guesthouse”), substantivization of Latin hospitālis (“hospitable; pertaining to a host or guest”). Doublet of ospitale and hotel, which were borrowed from Latin and French respectively.
