Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اورون (orun, “position; range; place”) (till the 16th Century), from Proto-Turkic *orun (“place”). Perhaps revived from Ottoman Turkish instead of Arabic makam and mevki in Modern Turkish. Cognate with Kazakh орын (oryn).
