From oor (ear) + vijg (fig); it is unclear whether oorvaag etc. developed independently, from oor + the root of vegen/vagen 'to wipe', or are popular etymology from the older oorvijg, which has Germanic cognates, including German Ohrfeige, and similar vegetal-manual semantics such as vuistlook (fist garlic).
