Originally a comparative form of the adverb norðr. From Proto-Germanic *nurþrōzô (comparative of *nurþraz (“north”)); the umlaut could be from an alternative form, and or analogous from syðri. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁en (“in”).
