Singularized plural of *nusë, from Proto-Albanian *nutjā, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)nubʰ-tyeh₂, from *snewbʰ-; compare Latin nūbō (“to marry a man”), Czech snoubiti (“to woo”). For the sense development, Greek νύφη (nýfi, “bride, daughter-in-law”), from Ancient Greek νύμφη (númphē, “bride”). Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *snutjā, from Proto-Indo-European *snu-eh₂- (“daughter-in-law”), derivative of *snusós (compare Latin nurus, Sanskrit स्नुषा (snuṣā), Ancient Greek νυός (nuós), Old English snoru). Attributed by Vladimir Orel 2000 (:34) to Latin nūptia as a later Latin loan.
