Etymology
Diminutive of now rare njewjerica + -ka, dissimilated from *wjewjerica, from Proto-Slavic *věverica (“squirrel”), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“squirrel”). Cognate with Upper Sorbian wjewjerčka, Polish wiewiórka, Czech veverka, Serbo-Croatian vjȅverica, and Ukrainian вивірка (vyvirka).
