Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *mɛːŋʔ (“mouth”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Kri meengq ("language"), Semai miing (“cheek”), Khmu [Cuang] miəŋ ("to chew"). Related to miếng (“piece”).
Attested in the Annan Jishi (安南即事, 13th century) as 皿 (MC mjaengX).
