From Proto-Vietic *s-maːʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *maʔ (“seed”); cognate with Old Mon ma (modern Mon မ (mɛ̀ˀ, “seed, kernel”), Proto-Katuic *hamaa (“seed; breed”) (whence Pacoh mma) and possibly Semelai smaʔ ("person").
