Etymology
From Middle High German mit(te)woche, from late Old High German mittawehha, a calque of Ecclesiastical Latin media hebdomas (“middle of the week”). Equivalent to métt + wucha. Cognate with German Mittwoch; compare English midweek, German Low German Middeweek.
