From Proto-Germanic *lunganjō, an extension of Proto-Germanic *lungô, from Proto-Indo-European *lengʷʰ- (“light, agile, nimble”). Cognate with Old Frisian lungen, Old Saxon lungannia, Old High German lunganna.
