Attested since circa 1409. From Old Galician-Portuguese, ultimately from Latin limax, limacem, perhaps under the influence of a local Celtic substrate;[1] or either from a substrate language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *sleh₁y- (compare Polish ślimak).[2] Compare also the synonyms limacha, limáchega, limaco.
