Usage notes
- As the reflexive pronoun se can indicate reciprocity, the use of l'un l'autre in conjunction with pronominal verbs is not always necessary and may sound unnatural or even incorrect. However, l'un l'autre can be included to clarify that an action occurs mutually between two (or more) subjects rather than each individual subject toward themselves, especially with transitive verbs that are not used in the pronominal form. Consider the following examples:
- Ils s’aiment eux-mêmes. ― They (two or more people) love themselves.
- Ils s’aiment l’un l’autre. ― They (two people) love each other.
- Ils s’aiment les uns les autres. ― They (more than two people) love each other.
- Prepositions or prepositional phrases required by the verb are inserted between the pronominal units. For example: l'un à l'autre, les uns aux autres, les unes à partir des autres, l'un vis-à-vis de l'autre, etc.
