Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *-laːs (“fire”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *slaas ~ *slaʔ (“fire, to burn”). Cognate with Proto-Palaungic *laːs (“to burn”) (whence Riang [Lang] las² ("to scrape, strike a match")) and Proto-Katuic *las (“to trigger; fire shot”) (whence Pacoh layh). Compare also Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects lả.
Attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經) as 阿呂 (MC 'a ljoX) (modern SV: a lã or a lữ).
