Etymology

From Middle High German lemen, lemmen, from Old High German lemmen, from Proto-Germanic *lamjaną, derived from *lamaz (lame), whence German lahm (lame). The simplification of the geminate and subsequent lengthening of the vowel by analogy with this underlying adjective.
