Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish قورتارمق (kurtarmak, to save, rescue, disentangle, set free), from Proto-Turkic *kurt-gar- (to rescue), causative of the unattested stem *kurt-. Cognate to kurtulmak (to be saved) passive form of the same root.
