Etymology

Borrowed from Latvian kaņepe. The plant name borrowed from Latvian is a Wanderwort known in many languages, for example Ancient Greek κάννᾰβῐς f (kánnabis), Russian конопля́ f (konopljá), Bulgarian коно́п m (konóp), German Hanf m, Swedish hampa c, Albanian kërp m, Georgian კანაფი (ḳanapi), Armenian կանեփ (kanepʻ), Turkish kenevir, kendir, Persian کنب (kanab), Arabic قِنَّب m (qinnab) and Akkadian 𒋆𒄣𒌦𒈾𒁍 (kunibu). From various sources the root has also been borrowed into many Finno-Ugric languages, for example Finnish hamppu, Erzya кансть (kansť), Moksha каньф (kańf), Eastern Mari кыне (kyńe) and Komi-Zyrian кӧнтусь (köntuś).
