Etymology
Earlier (c. 16th-18th century) borrowing from Spanish caballo (then spelled as cavallo), from Late Latin caballus. Doublet of kabalyo. During time of borrowing, Spanish ⟨ll⟩ (/ʝ/) still corresponds to Tagalog /j/, as per yeísmo. Compare Cebuano kabayo and Ilocano kabalio.
