From Proto-Italic *enge(gə)nwos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁én (“in”) + *ǵeǵn̥h₁wṓs, participle of *ǵeǵónh₁e; related to gignō. Equivalent to in- + gignō + -uus. See also indigenus.
