Usage notes

  • The word industri was introduced with the Industrial Revolution. Earlier, production plants were called bruk or verk, e.g. järnverk (ironworks). Productive activity was called flit or slöjd.
  • An industry in the broader sense of a trade is usually called a bransch, especially when it does not involve industrial production, like for nöjesbranschen (the entertainment industry). However, industri is often used more broadly as well, with nöjesindustrin being common as well (with a citation from 1933 in SAOB). In some cases, like for the automotive industry, bransch as opposed to industri might put more focus on business as opposed to manufacturing aspects.
