hunebed
Dutch
Alternative forms
- huinebed (obsolete)
- hunnebed
Etymology
From huin (“giant”) + bed (“bed”), roughly meaning "a bed (of stones) built by giants". Cognate to and probably formed after German Hünenbett (“dolmen”), which may have caused the Dutch -ui- to be replaced by -u- - although this may also be due to Low German influence.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈɦynəbɛt/, /ˈɦʏnəbɛt/
