hunebed

Dutch

Alternative forms

  • huinebed (obsolete)
  • hunnebed

Etymology

From huin (giant) + bed (bed), roughly meaning "a bed (of stones) built by giants". Cognate to and probably formed after German Hünenbett (dolmen), which may have caused the Dutch -ui- to be replaced by -u- - although this may also be due to Low German influence.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈɦynəbɛt/, /ˈɦʏnəbɛt/
  • (file)

Noun

hunebed n (plural hunebedden)

  1. (archaeology) dolmen
