godverdomme

Dutch

Etymology

Univerbation of God + verdomme. Literally meaning “God dammit, may God damn”. The -me is not the pronoun me, but represents the dated subjunctive suffix -e (preceded by a second -m- to mark the penultimate syllable as closed and the pronunciation of its vowel as short).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˌɣɔt.fərˈdɔ.mə/, /ˌɣɔt.fɛrˈdɔ.mə/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: god‧ver‧dom‧me

Interjection

godverdomme

  1. (vulgar, potentially offensive) Goddamn!
  2. (vulgar, potentially offensive) fuck!

Usage notes

  • Offensive to devout Christians, for uttering God's name in vain.
  • A very common imprecation with an elaborate variety of minced variants (such as gedverdemme) and intensified, dysphemistic derivations (such as godverdetyfus).
