geean

Old English

Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *gaaunaz, literally “with a lamb”. There are no exact cognates, but the archaic sense of ġe- and the use of *aunaz (the inherited Indo-Europan word for “lamb,” displaced later in Proto-Germanic by *lambaz) mean that this word was quite ancient.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /jeˈæ͜ɑːn/
